Sex and Celibacy: Instruments of Power

Children are a natural part of life. Literally born of a natural instinct, they are the next generation. Protecting successive generations grew out of this instinct, but with the storable energy of grain, the logic changed. People were now tied to the land.

The Reins of the Estate

Land is the ultimate provider of grain’s storable power, but it suffers from a form of entropy: Estate Decay. If an inheritance is divided equally among every child, the holding of that power thins out until it vanishes within a few generations. As James C. Scott argues in Seeing Like a State, the government was effectively blind until it had a record. The Domesday Book was the first set of high-powered spectacles for the English State. To stop land from unravelling into a thousand fragmented plots, the system developed a shortcut: Male Primogeniture. By forcing everything to go to a single son, the State ensured that the taxes and the soldiers stayed consolidated and easy to find.

This was not just a tradition; it was a trap that turned the family into an engine for the state. It required the total silencing of women through a rule called Coverture. As the legal giant William Blackstone wrote, a woman’s very existence was covered by her husband. In this cold logic, her body was simply the biological key needed to unlock the next generation of assets. Any independence she had was seen as a leak and a threat to the pile of wealth. The needs of the individual were sacrificed to the stability of ownership. This may sound cruel but it was the reality.

The Slavery Parallel

There is a mechanical symmetry between the status of women in these old systems and that of Chattel Slavery. Both systems worked by directing the daily work of staying alive and giving the value of that effort to someone else for free. To understand this, we have to look at the cost of a worker. In a fair system, a worker’s wage must cover their food, their shelter, and the cost of raising the next generation.

But by using the legal trap of Coverture, the state and the employer offloaded those costs onto the home. By labelling housework and raising children as being outside of real economics, the social order ensured that the crucial labour of survival was performed for no pay. This created a massive Capital Surplus. Because the industrialist and the state did not have to pay for the biological factory that produced and maintained the workforce, they kept that diverted energy as accumulated wealth. Orlando Patterson calls this Social Death. By stopping the individual woman from owning a single coin or signing a single paper, the system made sure they could never build their own networks of power. You were not a partner in your own life; you were a sub-contracted resource used to build the Industrial State.

Safeguarding Church Assets

To truly secure its wealth against the entropy of family, the Church developed an even more radical solution than primogeniture: it cut the biological thread entirely. By the eleventh century, the Gregorian Reforms mandated Clerical Celibacy. Even if Pope Alexander VI (Rodrigo Borgia) did not get the memo; he spent his papacy trying to carve out a principality in Italy for his son Cesare, but the technical fix for the institution remained. This mandate was a move to stop a potential land grab. If a priest has no legitimate children, he has no one to inherit the property. The leak of assets out of the institution and into a private family was plugged.

The economy of the Church was perfectly embedded in the bodies of its own clergy; by controlling their ability to reproduce, the institution controlled the flow of its capital. This created the Artificial Eunuch. Like the surgical eunuchs who guarded the palaces of Byzantium or Imperial China, the celibate priest was a servant who could never build a rival dynasty. By stripping the individual of their biological future, this ensured that their loyalty and more importantly, the assets they managed, stayed bound to the Church. The Church became an immortal corporation, fuelled by the diverted energy of thousands of men who, through the authority of faith, were legally and culturally forbidden from having a stake in the next generation. We stopped seeing the system for what it was; a labour-allocation strategy. We started seeing these hierarchies as being natural.

The Heir and the Spare

How do you manage any human surplus? Because the society was built on the institution of primogeniture, it produced a constant stream of children who had no place in the succession of the family estate. These younger sons and daughters became the dispensable social assets.

Younger sons, stripped of an inheritance, became the hardware of war. They were sent to the Crusades, the colonies, or the standing armies, where their biological drive for status was redirected into the service of the Crown. They were the expendable energy used for conquest. Meanwhile, daughters were used as diplomatic currency. Their bodies were traded in marriage to seal treaties and merge rival power blocks. By joining two dynasties together, the State could achieve a stability that no army could guarantee. The individual was not a person with their own future, but the small change used to pay for the promise of the peace.

The Cancer of Misogyny

This is the curse of our history: we have lived so long with this narrative that we have mistaken the walls of the cage for the horizon of the world. As Gerda Lerner argues in The Creation of Patriarchy, this was a slow, deliberate process of outsourcing a woman’s right to have her own say to a life managed by a man’s finances. By the time we reached the modern era, the technical rules of gender had become a psychological prison.

Misogyny became the automated guard of a system that outsourced producing the next generation; praising the outcome but belittling the effort. It is a cultural tripwire designed to pull back any individual who tries to reclaim their own power. We see this today in the extreme rhetoric of figures like Andrew Tate or the raw domestic friction shown in the TV drama Adolescence. It is also visible in the current Taliban regime in Afghanistan, where the system has been reset to its most basic, brutal rule.

The Reclamation

Feminism is the response to the culture of control. The first wave of this reclamation was the demand to be seen as a real person in the eyes of the law. Under the old rules, a woman’s identity was effectively owned by her husband. Even the simple act of buying bread on credit was a legal trap. This was not ancient history. As Patrick reminds us, in the 1970s in England, a married woman still required her husband’s signature just to obtain a bank loan.

This was a direct hit to Patriarchy. As women began to build their own horizontal networks of mutual support, they started bypassing the vertical tradition of Primogeniture. They stopped waiting for the benevolence of male inheritance and started creating their own safety nets. This reclamation was the first time women stood up and proved that a human being is not just an entry in someone else’s account book. It was the assertion that an individual has a life and a soul that exists entirely on its own, independent of all else. This is the moment that society found that liberating women benefitted everybody.
